From September 2025 I have started my residence journey hosted by Centre for Unusual Collaboration. Together with other two researchers coming from different fields, nationalities, and cities of residency, we will take this one-year journey to dive into each of our own research topics and/or interests around the underlying shared theme: equity in research. My aim for this year is to support my PhD research by being in a team-working setting, in this blog post, I will present (to you the readers and to myself) my general plan for this collaboration with CUCo.

Coming from art and design fields, there is no doubt and debate about “non-textual, visual, embodied” elements can be a form for research outcome However in the academia, even though more and more scholars are recognising the importance of integrating other elements alongside the textual outputs, using text is still the most important (and in most cases, the only one) way to present the research outcomes. Therefore during this one-year collaboration with CUCo, I would like to use my own PhD research project as the study case to rethink the role of texts and non-textual elements in research.

The work plan of the coming months are

  • Each months from November, there will be two blog posts published on my own portfolio website: https://yilinghung.com

  • One post will be in the written text form which contains literature reviews; another one will be in visual and imagery form

  • Under the umbrella goal of rethinking text and non-textual elements, there are the following sub-themes:

    • Reading & Meaning Making (November)

    • Reading & Drawing (December, January)

    • Reading & Actions/Movements (February, March)

    • Reading & Photography (May, June)

  • In April, I will host a CUCo event and there will be a blog post followed as a reflection on this event

  • In July, I will write an essay and/or create a performative lecture as a report to close the research-in-residence project

  • In December and March, two other peer researchers will host their event. I will also write reflections after attending their event
